Climate Resilience in Outdoor Recreation
Date: Thursday 6th November 2025
Time: 10:00 – 11:30
Location: Online via MS Teams
As part of the ORN new Action Plan, Managing the Impacts of Climate Change has been identified as a key theme. To support members in this area, we are hosting a series of events exploring how outdoor recreation providers can develop adaptive strategies that:
* Build resilience in the face of climate change
* Sustain outdoor recreation opportunities into the future
* Deliver wider community adaptation benefits, such as reducing flood and heat risks
The first in this series will be a webinar to set the scene and introduce climate resilience as a vital area for the outdoor recreation sector to engage with.
Expert input will be provided by Begonia Pedreira-Regueira (Senior Climate Resilience Manager at the Defence Infrastructure Organisation), who will guide participants through:
* Context-setting: levels of global warming and associated risks
* Tools for mapping changes and assessing risk at local and landscape scales
* Examples of good practice in climate adaptation and what this means for recreation management
We are also very keen to include insights from James Nevitt (Senior Public Access & Recreation Advisor at the Defence Infrastructure Organisation), highlighting how the defence estate is approaching climate resilience and what lessons might be transferable to the wider sector.
The aim of the webinar is not only to raise awareness but also to empower organisations to identify opportunities and make meaningful improvements in their own contexts. By showcasing risks, tools, and practical examples, we hope to drive both interest and action at local levels, ensuring that outdoor recreation continues to thrive under a changing climate.
Other speakers to include:
- Natural England – Andy McIntosh
- National Trust
