Details
This research seminar will focus on the concept of ‘values’ in outdoor recreation. We will consider economic value – of both the environment and of recreation activities – as well as concepts of wider social value, that are harder to measure yet still powerful and relevant to the outdoor recreation sector. We will consider the ecosystem approach as well as philosophical and methodological approaches, ranging from mainstream economics through to some of the more interpretative approaches of the arts and humanities.
Purpose of the seminar
To showcase recent and current research relating to value in the sector, demonstrating the range of relevant approaches and methodologies. To provide an opportunity to discuss and debate value as a concept and its current relevance to the sector. To provide a forum for academics, policy makers and practitioners to discuss the philosophical and practical issues relating to researching value.
Format
This will be an intimate seminar limited to a maximum of 40 participants.
Delegates will hear a range of short presentations in the morning, each followed by facilitated discussion designed to highlight ‘state of the art work’ in research and enable practitioners to discuss how it relates to their agendas.
There will then be a short participatory exercise to stimulate ideas for future research topics, clustering around similar themes, before lunch.
After lunch, 4 smaller themed groups will discuss how to develop new agendas and explore opportunities for working together (research, policy and practice): themes partially determined by outcomes from the pre-lunch session.
Who is the seminar for?
