ORN Co-Chair Application
The Outdoor Recreation Network is currently seeking to appoint a new Co-Chair in 2025.
ORN has adopted a Co-Chair model. Having two Chairs selected from member organisations brings many positives, including both chairs having a deep knowledge of the Network, sharing of the leadership role, sounding ideas off one-another, and continuity in leadership handovers.
With Pippa Langford, Principal Specialist Recreation and Access, Natural England stepping down as a Co-Chair at the end of October 2025, ORN is seeking a new driven and enthusiastic Co-Chair. This new appointee will share this leadership role with Co-Chair James Nevitt, Senior Public Access & Recreation Advisor – Technical Services, Defence Infrastructure Organisation (MOD).

What the role will involve
The ORN Co-Chair role offers an exciting opportunity to shape the direction and impact of the network. As Co-Chair, you will work closely with your fellow Co-Chair, James Nevitt, the ORN Executive Committee, and the Secretariat to guide the network’s activities, support its members, and champion its objectives.
You’ll play a key part in setting priorities, facilitating collaboration, and representing the ORN within and beyond the network. This role provides valuable experience in strategic leadership, stakeholder engagement, and network development – an excellent opportunity for professional growth and to raise the profile of both yourself and your organisation.
Purpose of the role
Serve as the custodian of ORN, ensuring the network’s long-term sustainability. Provide strategic thought leadership by identifying key insights, emerging trends, and evolving needs of professional staff and members.
Delivery of the current ORN Action Plan
Co lead the delivery of the current ORN Action Plan 2025 - 2028 and the creation of a new Action Plan in 2028 (with support of the ORN Executive, Secretariat and members.
Growing the network
Collaborate with a supportive Executive, Secretariat, and members to expand membership, develop sustainable funding strategies, and deliver an engaging and impactful event program.

ORN Executive Committee
The Outdoor Recreation Network Executive Committee is a collaborative group of representatives from the ‘Executive Member’ organisations within our network.
These dedicated individuals bring a wealth of experience and passion for outdoor recreation, playing a pivotal role in overseeing the work of the ORN Secretariat and shaping the event programmes delivered by the Network. Through their collective efforts, the Committee fosters partnerships, such as the ‘Buddy Scheme,’ and creates valuable training and networking opportunities that support the growth and development of outdoor recreation across the UK and Ireland. Their work ensures that the sector continues to thrive, offering meaningful connections and resources for all involved.
Role of the ORN Secretariat
The Co-Chairpersons and Executive Committee have strong support from ORN Secretariat who deliver the meetings, events (in-person and online), communication, and secure membership renewals.
This role is currently delivered by Outscape (retained from October 2018 and subject to an annual Service Level Agreement).
Terms of the Appointment of the ORN Co-Chair
- The position of ORN Co-Chair is voluntary, non-paid, and independent
- Co-Chair can come from any ORN member organisation
- The position of Co-Chair will be held for a period of 3 years following appointment
- The position can be held for consecutive terms by re-election
- The position allows the right candidate to network and raise their own profile across the outdoor recreation sector within the UK and Ireland.
The Process
- Applications and nominations for the post of Co-Chair can be made by any member using the application form linked below.
- The applicant and their organisation must have agreed in principle to the application
- The applicant must also prepare a statement about why they want the role, their vision for ORN and how they would work with members and others to achieve it
- The ‘Appointment of ORN Co-Chair Sub-Group’ will invite applicants to attend an online interview
- The Executive Committee will make the final decision.
Essential Criteria (Candidates must be able to successfully demonstrate their ability to meet the following essential criteria):
Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years at senior management level within an outdoor recreation orientated organisation.
- Prior experience of:
* Successful strategic planning and implementation
* Organisational change / transformation
* Performing the role of Chair for committees or working groups
Behaviour and competences:
- Aptitude to think strategically, analytically, problem solve and make decisions.
- Ability to act as an ambassador and recruit new members.
- Strong verbal communicator to confidently:
* advise, communicate, and influence at all levels in a sensitive manner
* deliver addresses at key ORN events
* act as an ambassador for ORN - Highly self-motivated with the ability to act on personal initiative.
- Comfortable chairing webinars, in person conferences and masterclasses.
- Valuable team player with a desire to share learning and ideas.
- Detailed knowledge of key issues and trends in outdoor recreation across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
