Online Academic Research Group Meeting

ORN was delighted to host an engaging session with Penny Burnt and Emma Formoy from the Environment Agency’s National Environmental Assessment Service (NEAS) on Wednesday 15th October. During this session those present heard insights into the ambitious Oxford Flood Alleviation Scheme, set to begin construction between 2026 and 2031, and how the project is being designed to deliver multiple community benefits—including improved flood resilience, enhanced biodiversity, and new recreational opportunities.

The Oxford Flood Alleviation Scheme will be a new 5km wetland wildlife corridor to the west of the historic city of Oxford.  The scheme will move water away from homes, businesses and infrastructure to reduce the risk of damaging and disruptive flooding. The scheme will also deliver wider environmental and social benefits, including new habitats and new recreation opportunities. The project team are working in collaboration with the local community and the University of Oxford on long-term academic and citizen science research opportunities at the site.

The event also included an interactive discussion, where attendees shared ideas, highlighted valuable areas for research, and offered practical suggestions on how to make the most of this unique opportunity.

This meeting is now available to watch-on-demand.
