Cycling organisations joined forces with Britain’s biggest recreational land managers to support a new, long-term research project undertaken by Edinburgh Napier University on the use of off-road e-bikes, including electric mountain bikes. The webinar will share findings from the research which focused on current and future trends as well as the opportunities and challenges presented by the exciting surge in the growth of the e-MTB market over recent years. It is being supported by British Cycling, Welsh Cycling, Scottish Cycling (through Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland), Scottish Forestry, NatureScot, Forestry England and Natural Resources Wales, and will help the sector to better understand user habits and technical developments and support decision-making.
The aim of this research was to:
- To understand the growth/direction of the market and user group.
- To increase overall knowledge regarding trail design and environmental impacts related to e-MTB’s use in both trail centers and the wider countryside.
- To provide land managers/owners and stakeholders with data to help assist future decisions/education and policy relating to e-MTB use in a responsible and sustainable way.
- To understand the population of riders to help inform responsible behaviour and behaviour change in the desired locations.
This webinar will consider the research purpose and scope, results, and also outputs and indicators as to what e-MTB users are seeking and what land managers could consider in meeting their increasing requirements.
